Uncharted Territories
As travelers, we're often drawn to the unknown, the unexplored, and the mysterious. We crave experiences that push us out of our comfort zones and challenge our perceptions. For those who dare to venture into the unknown, the world offers a plethora of uncharted territories waiting to be discovered. In this article, we'll delve into the most enigmatic and inaccessible destinations on the planet, from abandoned cities to remote archipelagos, and hidden landmarks that will leave you in awe.
Abandoned Cities
There's something eerily fascinating about abandoned cities. These once-thriving metropolises, now reclaimed by nature, hold secrets and stories of the past. One such city is Pripyat, Ukraine, which was evacuated after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986. Today, Pripyat stands as a haunting reminder of the devastating consequences of human error.
"The city was abandoned in a hurry, and everything was left behind. It's like time stood still," says Sergei, a local guide who has been exploring Pripyat for years. As you wander through the empty streets, you'll notice the remnants of a once-vibrant community: a rusting Ferris wheel, a decaying school, and even a abandoned hospital. The experience is both haunting and humbling, a poignant reminder of the transience of human existence.
Another abandoned city that's garnered significant attention is Varosha, Cyprus. Once a thriving beach resort, Varosha was abandoned in 1974 after the Turkish invasion. Today, the city remains frozen in time, with crumbling hotels, vacant streets, and a stunning beach that's slowly being reclaimed by nature.
Remote Archipelagos
For those who crave adventure and isolation, remote archipelagos offer a unique opportunity to disconnect from the world and reconnect with nature. The Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, are one such example. This volcanic archipelago is home to an incredible array of endemic species, including giant tortoises, marine iguanas, and blue-footed boobies.
As you explore the islands, you'll encounter an untouched wilderness that's both fragile and resilient. The Galapagos Islands are a testament to the incredible diversity of life on Earth and the importance of preserving our natural heritage.
Another remote archipelago that's worth exploring is the Azores, Portugal. Located in the Atlantic Ocean, the Azores is a chain of nine volcanic islands that offer breathtaking landscapes, hot springs, and a unique cultural heritage.
Hidden Trekking Routes
For the more adventurous traveler, hidden trekking routes offer a chance to explore the world's most spectacular landscapes. The Tavan Bogd trek in Mongolia is one such example. This challenging trek takes you through the Altai Mountains, offering breathtaking views of glaciers, alpine lakes, and towering peaks.
As you trek through the wilderness, you'll encounter nomadic herders, eagles, and even the occasional snow leopard. The experience is both exhilarating and humbling, a reminder of the awe-inspiring beauty of the natural world.
Another hidden trekking route that's worth exploring is the Huayhuash Circuit in Peru. This challenging trek takes you through the Cordillera Huayhuash mountain range, offering breathtaking views of glaciers, alpine lakes, and towering peaks.
Inaccessible Landmarks
Finally, there are the inaccessible landmarks that dot our planet. These natural wonders are often hidden from view, requiring intrepid travelers to venture off the beaten path. The Hang Son Doong cave in Vietnam is one such example. The world's largest cave is a massive limestone cavern that's only accessible by a challenging trek through the jungle.
As you enter the cave, you'll be struck by its sheer scale and beauty. The cave's towering ceilings, vast chambers, and ethereal landscapes are a testament to the incredible diversity of our planet's natural wonders.
Another inaccessible landmark that's worth exploring is the Darvaza Crater in Turkmenistan. This natural gas field has been burning continuously since 1971, creating a surreal landscape that's both beautiful and haunting.
Some of the most impressive inaccessible landmarks include:
- The Trolltunga rock formation in Norway, a challenging hike rewarded with a unique rock formation resembling a troll's tongue
- The Grand Prismatic Spring in the United States, the largest hot spring in the country, known for its vibrant colors and unique geology
- The Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, the world's largest salt flat, creating a surreal landscape of white salt and mirror-like reflections

An amazing horse safari
We had an excellent time in Jaipur with this tour company. Kush was excellent at communicating with us and escorting us to the farm. The horses were extremely well taken care of, beautiful Marwari horses with pointed ears. The farm itself was homely, everyone there was extremely welcoming and it felt like home. Dp hosted us and ensured everything ran smoothly, I couldn’t fault his hospitality and love towards the horses. more
The perfect day for a horse lover!
Khushal was incredibly helpful in setting up our day and making sure it was one to remember. We were traveling to India for my best friend’s 50th birthday and as she is an avid rider and lover of horses this seemed like the perfect adventure. more
More
While in Rajasthan we (my husband and I and our two girls of 14 and 12) were keen to try and find a place to ride. It would have been wonderful to go for some days on a horse safari, but we hadn’t much time, so settled this time on going for a shorter ride. I’m so happy we came across Khush at Le Tour de India and DP Bana and his stud farm. We were taken in as friends to join a wonderful morning ride through villages and fields outside Jaipur. It was a completely different and wonderful experience to ride the sensitive, spirited and forward-going Marwani horses. Much care was taken by the captain leading the ride to ensure that everyone was managing with their mounts. When we returned after a great ride we sat under the canopy to enjoy a lovely spread for breakfast, and then had a great time getting on a couple of the fantastic polo ponies they have at the stables, and trying to play some polo – so much fun! Aside from the wonderful horses and riding, what also made this such a special experience was the warmth and friendliness of all those involved. Khush from Le Tour de India, who organised the morning ride was as helpful as it’s possible to be. I had mentioned to him when we were organising our trip that we’d love to see a polo match while we were in Jaipur, and he written back to say that the season was unfortunately over. But the day we arrived in Jaipur he wrote and surprised us by saying that he had set things up for us to go and watch a match that evening! Great fun to go to the polo ground and take it all in. DP Bana, who met us and looked after us like family at the polo match and the next day at his stud farm from where we went on our morning ride, was just so generous and warm in including us and introducing us to his friends, who also joined us the next day for the morning ride. Altogether very special, as it felt as though we made a real connection with each other in just a short time. Way over and above the usual tourist experience. Thank you all. Very much hope to see you again.
