Top Basketball Teams in History

Throughout the history of professional basketball, certain teams have separated themselves from the rest through dominance, innovation, and lasting cultural impact. The discussion about the top basketball teams is not simply about championships — it is about legacy, influence, and the ability to redefine what excellence looks like on the court. Truly elite teams do more than win titles; they establish standards that future generations attempt to replicate. They combine superstar talent, elite coaching, tactical intelligence, and mental resilience under pressure. When evaluating the top basketball teams, we must consider regular-season dominance, playoff performance, historical context, innovation, and long-term impact on the evolution of the game.

Great teams also emerge within specific competitive landscapes. Some rise during highly contested eras and still manage to dominate. Others redefine strategy, forcing the entire league to adapt. The following teams represent the highest level of basketball excellence ever assembled. Each section focuses on their achievements, historical importance, and the defining qualities that secured their place among the top basketball teams of all time.

1995–96 Chicago Bulls

The 1995–96 Chicago Bulls set a new benchmark for greatness by finishing the regular season with a historic 72–10 record. This achievement alone placed them instantly among the top basketball teams in NBA history. Led by Michael Jordan at the peak of his powers, the team combined elite scoring, lockdown perimeter defense, and championship experience. Scottie Pippen’s versatility and Dennis Rodman’s rebounding dominance created a perfectly balanced supporting structure. Under Phil Jackson’s leadership and the triangle offense system, the Bulls demonstrated tactical discipline and mental toughness throughout the season.

In the playoffs, Chicago reinforced its dominance by capturing the NBA Championship in convincing fashion. Their ability to control the tempo of games and execute under pressure separated them from competitors. The team’s defensive intensity often suffocated opposing offenses, while Jordan delivered iconic performances on the biggest stage. Beyond statistics, the 1995–96 Bulls globalized the NBA brand and expanded basketball’s international popularity. Their combination of excellence, marketability, and sustained dominance defines what it means to be one of the top basketball teams ever assembled.

2016–17 Golden State Warriors

The 2016–17 Golden State Warriors represented the modern evolution of basketball at its most efficient and explosive. After adding Kevin Durant to an already historic core, the Warriors became nearly unstoppable on both ends of the floor. They finished the regular season 67–15, but their playoff run was even more impressive. Posting a 16–1 postseason record, they delivered one of the most dominant playoff performances in league history. Their spacing, ball movement, and three-point shooting redefined offensive strategy across the NBA.

Stephen Curry’s shooting gravity, Klay Thompson’s perimeter efficiency, and Durant’s isolation scoring created matchup nightmares. Defensively, Draymond Green anchored a versatile switching system that neutralized traditional offensive sets. The Warriors did not simply win; they forced the league to rethink roster construction and offensive philosophy. Their emphasis on pace, space, and shooting accelerated the three-point revolution. As a result, they firmly established themselves among the top basketball teams in terms of innovation and dominance.

1985–86 Boston Celtics

The 1985–86 Boston Celtics are widely regarded as one of the most complete teams in basketball history. Finishing with a 67–15 record, they showcased an extraordinary balance between offense and defense. Larry Bird delivered one of the most efficient and intelligent seasons ever by a forward, combining scoring, playmaking, and leadership. The Celtics were nearly unbeatable at home, posting a remarkable 40–1 record in Boston Garden. Their chemistry and unselfish ball movement made them exceptionally difficult to defend.

In the playoffs, Boston translated regular-season dominance into a championship run. Their half-court execution and physical interior presence allowed them to control games strategically. The frontcourt depth and defensive intensity gave them flexibility against different opponents. This team represented the pinnacle of 1980s team basketball, built on fundamentals and collective IQ. Their cohesion and championship success solidify their place among the top basketball teams in NBA history.

An amazing horse safari

We had an excellent time in Jaipur with this tour company. Kush was excellent at communicating with us and escorting us to the farm. The horses were extremely well taken care of, beautiful Marwari horses with pointed ears. The farm itself was homely, everyone there was extremely welcoming and it felt like home. Dp hosted us and ensured everything ran smoothly, I couldn’t fault his hospitality and love towards the horses. more

While in Rajasthan we (my husband and I and our two girls of 14 and 12) were keen to try and find a place to ride. It would have been wonderful to go for some days on a horse safari, but we hadn’t much time, so settled this time on going for a shorter ride. I’m so happy we came across Khush at Le Tour de India and DP Bana and his stud farm. We were taken in as friends to join a wonderful morning ride through villages and fields outside Jaipur. It was a completely different and wonderful experience to ride the sensitive, spirited and forward-going Marwani horses. Much care was taken by the captain leading the ride to ensure that everyone was managing with their mounts. When we returned after a great ride we sat under the canopy to enjoy a lovely spread for breakfast, and then had a great time getting on a couple of the fantastic polo ponies they have at the stables, and trying to play some polo – so much fun! Aside from the wonderful horses and riding, what also made this such a special experience was the warmth and friendliness of all those involved. Khush from Le Tour de India, who organised the morning ride was as helpful as it’s possible to be. I had mentioned to him when we were organising our trip that we’d love to see a polo match while we were in Jaipur, and he written back to say that the season was unfortunately over. But the day we arrived in Jaipur he wrote and surprised us by saying that he had set things up for us to go and watch a match that evening! Great fun to go to the polo ground and take it all in. DP Bana, who met us and looked after us like family at the polo match and the next day at his stud farm from where we went on our morning ride, was just so generous and warm in including us and introducing us to his friends, who also joined us the next day for the morning ride. Altogether very special, as it felt as though we made a real connection with each other in just a short time. Way over and above the usual tourist experience. Thank you all. Very much hope to see you again.
